James Gunn's Superman set to soar at US box office with $135 million opening: Early tracking
James Gunn's Superman is projected to rake in $135 million at the U.S. box office, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter. With three weeks remaining until its July 11 release, early tracking numbers place the highly anticipated DC film firmly among the studio's top openers. If the current projection holds, Superman would secure a strong debut—though still short of 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opened at $166 million. It would, however, outpace 2013's Man of Steel, which launched with $116 million. According to data from National Research Group (NRG) accessed by The Hollywood Reporter, the tracking range lies between $125 million and $145 million. DC Studios and Warner Bros. insiders are reportedly setting expectations slightly lower, estimating between $90 million and $125 million. Social media momentum has led some box office analysts to forecast an even higher opening—up to $175 million. If that materializes, Gunn's reboot would become the biggest DC debut to date, surpassing Batman v Superman and edging out Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy. The film marks the first original release under James Gunn and Peter Safran's leadership of DC Studios. With the franchise undergoing a complete reset, the success of Superman will likely set the tone for its future. David Corenswet leads the cast as Clark Kent, opposite Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Also starring are Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Edi Gathegi, and Isabela Merced. The storyline reintroduces Superman's origin with modern updates—including the fan-favourite Krypto the Superdog. What is the release date for James Gunn's Superman? It is scheduled to release in North America on July 11, 2025. How much is Superman projected to earn at the U.S. box office?Early tracking places the film's domestic debut at $135 million. Air India cabin crew Singson's remains arrive in Manipur; funeral likely today
The mortal remains of Air India cabin crew Lamnunthem Singson, who died in the Ahmedabad plane crash on June 12, reached her hometown in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on Thursday night, after being flown to Dimapur airport in Nagaland. The 26-year-old was among the 241 passengers and crew aboard Air India Flight AI 171, which crashed just seconds after takeoff. Her body was flown from Ahmedabad to Dimapur on an IndiGo flight, and received by family members, community representatives, and officials at the airport. On the way from Dimapur to Kangpokpi by road, the convoy halted for a few minutes in the Nagaland capital to allow Kuki Union Kohima and Kuki mother's to bid her farewell and pay tribute to the departed soul, a cousin of Singson told PTI. "Normally we (the Kuki people) don't hold last rites at the night. Most likely it will be held tommorow. Today, there will be prayer sessions and other traditional funeral related programmes," he said. Earlier in the day, a solemn programme was held at Dimapur airport to receive the mortal remains of Singson. On the occasion, floral tributes were paid by officials and representatives from several organisations, including the Kuki Community Dimapur, Kuki Students' Union Nagaland, Naga Council Dimapur, Dimapur District Citizens Forum, Zeliang Youth Organisation Dimapur, Chumoukedima Kuki Union, and the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee. The groups offered condolences to the bereaved family and paid their last respects to the departed soul. Originally from Old Lambulane colony in Imphal, Singson's family relocated to Kangpokpi in 2023 following the outbreak of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in the state. Tragically, another cabin crew member from Manipur, Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, who belonged to the Meitei community, also died in the same disaster. Her mortal remains are yet to arrive in the state.

Chelsea boss Maresca 'trusts' Mudryk after doping charge
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said Thursday he still maintained trust in Mykhailo Mudryk after the Ukrainian winger was charged by England's Football Association with violating anti-doping rules, but confirmed the club were looking to strengthen in his position. "'Mischa' is a Chelsea player. As long as he is a Chelsea player, I will trust all the Chelsea players," Maresca told reporters in Philadelphia ahead of his team's Club World Cup meeting with Flamengo on Friday. Mudryk has not played for Chelsea since November 28 following his provisional suspension by the FA for an "adverse finding in a routine urine test" in December. He could face a potential ban of up to four years under FA rules. Mudryk is not with the Chelsea squad for the tournament in the United States and Maresca said he has had no contact with the player since the UEFA Conference League final win over Real Betis in Poland late last month. "The last time I spoke with 'Mischa' was in Poland and he was quite good. "Since that day I have not spoken with him so I don't know how he is now but for sure in the next days, in the next weeks, we are going to have contact with him." Mudryk was signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 for 100 million euros but his time at Chelsea has been dogged by inconsistency, with erratic performances only occasionally off-set by flashes of his ability. He has scored just 10 goals in 73 appearances in all competitions for the Blues. Maresca revealed that he is hoping to sign a new wide attacker before the start of the Premier League season. "We had already one entire season almost without 'Mischa', last season, and we tried to find different solutions with some of the academy players, like Tyrique , but we are going to decide to go for a winger, and not because of 'Mischa'," Maresca said. "It is quite clear that it is a position that we need to improve." Chelsea can expect to face challenging conditions on Friday against Flamengo, with heat and humidity rising in Philadelphia in recent days and the match kicking off at 2:00 pm local time. The game is likely to be key in deciding who tops Group D with both teams fresh from winning 2-0 in their opening match at the tournament Chelsea got the better of Los Angeles FC in Atlanta while Flamengo defeated Esperance. Maresca said the conditions could favour the Brazilian giants and added that he would make several changes to his line-up the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Malo Gusto and new signing Liam Delap are among those pushing for starts. "It is not easy because of the temperature. This is the reason why we are going to try to rotate players," the coach added. "Unfortunately for us Brazilian teams are more used to playing with this kind of temperature, but it doesn't matter, we will try to do our best and win the game." Flamengo, coached by former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea player Filipe Luis, are top of the Brazilian league and have lost only one of their last 16 outings in all competitions. "They are a very good team, they play nice football, it is nice to watch them," Maresca said. "They have many good players. Watching them, you realise they are a very good team, very good organisation. "Like any Brazilian team they are full of quality, technical players, and we will need to be at our best to win the game." as/ea

Tennis-Alcaraz overcomes Munar marathon to reach Queen's quarters
LONDON (Reuters) -Top seed Carlos Alcaraz was pushed all the way by fellow-Spaniard Jaume Munar in a thrilling contest before clinching a 6-4 6-7(7) 7-5 win and advanced to the Queen's Club Championships quarter-finals on Thursday. Alcaraz recently came out on top in an epic French Open final against Jannik Sinner, and while this second round clash in London may not have reached those same dizzying heights, the British crowd were served up an enthralling battle. The world number two was a break down in the deciding set but showed his strength once more as Alcaraz stretched his winning run to 15 matches, the longest streak of his career. "It was a really tough battle that we had today," Alcaraz said after more than three hours on court. "He's a great competitor and he showed how difficult it is to beat him." Alcaraz, the 2023 champion, looked well in control as he eased to take the opening set, and after saving four break and set points at 5-4 down in the second he forced Munar to a tiebreaker. The pair traded early breaks with neither player holding serve over the first four points, before a Munar double fault allowed Alcaraz to take a 5-4 lead. He smashed an ace but then hit a double fault of his own on match point. Munar made him pay this time to force a deciding set. After Alcaraz went 2-0 up, the French Open champion was broken in his next two service games and Munar went into a 4-2 lead. Alcaraz, however, was not done yet, and two more breaks of serve sealed a hard-earned victory as he continued his preparations for Wimbledon, where the Spaniard will be aiming to complete a hat-trick of triumphs. "I'm proud of the level I showed today. It's my second match on grass this year," Alcaraz said. "There were moments I struggled a lot mentally and physically. I still don't know how I'm standing here. But I'm really happy I've given myself another chance in the quarter-finals." Alcaraz will face either French lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech or American Reilly Opelka. FEARNLEY ADVANCES British number two Jacob Fearnley reached his first ATP Tour quarter-final with a 6-3 2-6 6-2 win over French qualifier Corentin Moutet. "I'm very happy to be in my first quarter-final, it's even better to do it here in the UK," Fearnley said. "I tried to stick to my game plan and be aggressive. I did that better in the third set and the result speaks for itself." Fearnley raced into a 3-0 lead, and while Moutet broke back, the Briton responded immediately with another break of his own to ease through the first set. Moutet did likewise in the second, sailing 3-0 ahead before breaking for a second time to clinch the set and force the decider, where Fearnley broke twice before holding serve to love to clinch victory in style. The 23-year-old will now face Jiri Lehecka after the Czech beat Canada's Gabriel Diallo 6-4 6-2. (Reporting by Trevor Stynes, editing by Pritha Sarkar)
